Gegants or Torroella de Montgrí in Aserrí,
October 2014

Torroella de Montgrí is a Spanish municipality in the region of Bajo Ampurdán in the province of Gerona, an autonomous community of Catalonia. Geographically it is located in the Empordà plain, at the foot of the Montgrí Massif, on the north bank of the Ter river. The plain that belongs to the municipality had formed until the 18th century the pond of Torroella until it was dried. To the northwest of its territory is the nucleus of Sobrestany. Its name is reminiscent of the old pass of the River Ter, north of the Montgrí Massif.

Aserrí, is the sixth Canton of the province of San José. It is located near the western foothills of the Talamanca mountain range, formed by the Bustamante hills that divide the Central Valley of volcanic origin with the Los Santos Valley of tectonic origin, basins of the Grande de Tárcoles and Parrita rivers respectively, which flow into in the Pacific Ocean.

It is located south of the city of San José, in the area bordering the Province of Cartago and borders the cantons of Desamparados, Acosta, Alajuelita, Parrita, León Cortés Castro and Tarrazú and has 7 districts: Aserrí, Tarbaca, Vuelta de Jorco, San Gabriel, La Legua, Monterrey and Salitrillos.

In spite of these big differences and although it does not look like a first impression, Aserrí and Torroella de Montgrí have many things in common in cultural matters, because in both communities the festival of the giants is lived.

That is why our Association took on the challenge of inviting our country to the artistic cast of the Association of Amics dels Gegants i Capgrossos, in its capacity as managers and depositaries of the tradition of the giants of Torroella de Montgrí, in Gerona.

Thus, it was attended by a total of 25 artists, from October 23 to November 3 to 2014, providing the respective accommodation, food and internal transport in our country, as stipulated in January 2013 the city of Barcelona, with Mr. Jaume López Puigbó, President of the International Circle of Amics dels Gegants, of which we are part.

In addition to the canton of Aserrí, the artists visited and shared their art in the friendly cantons of Alajuelita, Escazú, Belén, Desamparados, Grecia and Puntarenas; as well as the facilities of the State University at a Distance (UNED), in addition to the Aserrí's districts of La Legua, Vuelta de Jorco and San Gabriel, where they enjoyed the marvelouss ecological of these areas.

This invitation is part of the cultural exchange between both Associations and the International Circle of Cercle International of Amics dels Gegants, so in the month of August next year, we hope to return the visit and be able to share with a people for whom we profess a special affection.

In AGruCA, we consider that this type of exchanges are important for the cultural growth of our Canton.

We compile some photographs of this wonderful experience, where two groups became one:

This invitation was part of the cultural exchange between both Associations and the International Circle of Cercle Internacional d'Amics dels Gegants, for which we presented the show: "La Mascarada de mi pueblo" with Cimarrona: a show alluding to the festival of masks, commonly observed in the “turns” or traditional celebrations in the Costa Rican communities. It consists of the presentation of traditional masks such as giants, big heads, masks, dwarfs, special characters and stilts; accompanied by Cimarrona.

Our Tour was declared of Cultural Interest by the Ministry of Culture and the Presidency of the Republic, according to Executive Agreement 204-C of October 6, 2015.

As expected, the presentations were a complete success and the Catalan people made Costa Rican popular art their own. Our eternal thanks to the communities of Torroella de Montgrí, L'Estartit, Port de La Selva, Pals, Girona and L'Escala.
